DevilDriver

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

DevilDriver is a groove metal band from Santa Barbara, California. Coal Chamber vocalist Dez Fafara was not happy with the direction Coal Chamber was going in musically, and met musicians who had a similar music interest at a barbecue and bar. Fafara, guitarists Evan Pitts and Jeff Kendrick, bassist Jon Miller, and then-guitarist John Boecklin formed Deathride. Due to copyright issues and the name being taken by several bands, Deathride changed its name to DevilDriver, which refers to bells Italian witches used to drive evil forces away.
The band's self-titled album was not well received by some music critics. The primary writer of the album, Pitts, left the band and was replaced by Mike Spreitzer. Their second album, The Fury of Our Maker's Hand received a better reception with critics, and entered the Billboard 200 at number 117. The band embarked on several tours including Ozzfest and a Guinness world record was attempted at the 2007 Download Festival for the "largest circle pit".
The band was originally known as Deathride, but due to their overwhelmingly bad reception, they changed their name in a hope to increase popularity. which was changed as Fafara felt there were too many bands with that name; a band in Norfolk, Virginia, and a bicycle racing team. Another problem was that the band's label, Roadrunner Records were unable to secure copyright. The members compiled a list of roughly two hundred names to go for a more original approach. Fafara's wife had a book by Italian witchcraft author Raven Grimassi on Stregheria, and came across the term 'devil driver'. The term 'devil driver' refers to bells Italian witches used to drive evil forces away. Fafara thought it was appropriate because it sounded "evil", and thought the term "suits his life". The band's logo is the Cross of Confusion, which has existed for thousands of years and refers to "question religion, question authority, question everything around you". Fafara was brought up to "question everything" and was exposed to Italian witchcraft through his grandparents.
Current members: Dez Fafara - vocals Mike Spreitzer - guitar Jeff Kendrick - guitar Jon Miller - bass John Boecklin - drums, additional guitar
Former members: Evan Pitts - Guitar

Dismember

Dismember is a Swedish death metal band that formed from members of Carnage in 1988. They are well known in the extreme metal underground. The band formed in Stockholm in 1988. After a hiatus, the band began recording in earnest in 1991 and released their debut, Like an Ever Flowing Stream in 1991. The album became an early example of Scandinavian death metal and established the band's fanbase, which grew with the release of Pieces (1992). The song "Skin Her Alive" prompted an obscenity charge in the United Kingdom, against which the band successfully defended themselves.
In 1993 Dismember released Indecent & Obscene, their most successful album ever, which featured their most famous theme: "Dreaming in Red" videoclip was shown very frequently in MTV's Headbanger's Ball.

Like many of the other Scandinavian death metal bands, Dismember began softening their sound in the mid-1990s, with 1995's Massive Killing Capacity more melodic approaches, which had a good public response. Nevertheless, they attempted a return to style with 1997's Death Metal, which ultimately became a sales disappointment.
In 2000, attempting to recover some power of their first two albums, and thus the once large fanbase, a much heavier album was released. Musically somewhere between Indecent and Obscene and Massive Killing Capacity, Hate Campaign was deliberately not taken seriously by Nuclear Blast, since this was the last album to edit for Dismember. Instead Nuclear Blast preferred to have Dismember as an icon from the past (symbolised by Like an Ever Flowing Stream and Indecent and Obscene) and kept investing in secure profits, exploiting these first two albums, releasing new special re-editions.

Diamond Head

Diamond Head are a British heavy metal band formed in 1976 in Stourbridge, England. They were one of the leading members of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and are acknowledged by later bands like Metallica and Megadeth as an important early influence.
Formed by school friends in 1976 Brian Tatler and Duncan Scott with Tatler playing on a Cheap Fuzz guitar and Scott on Biscuit Tins. The name "Diamond Head" came from a Phil Manzanera album, that Tatler had a poster of in his room. Sean Harris later joined the band after they learned about his vocal abilities while on a school trip, singing Gene Vincent's 1956 hit "Be-Bop-A-Lula", and auditioned him in Tatler's bedroom. Bassist Colin Kimberley, a friend of Tatler's from primary school, joined the band some months later (and was in fact Diamond Head's fourth bassist) and the band started to play local gigs in the Black Country area. In fact their first gig was at High Park School in Birmingham on 10th February 1976, but things did not go too smoothly at that gig, with problems with feedback spoiling the songs.
Even from their early days the band refused to play cover songs and stuck to their own material. The only exception to this was the adding of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" in 1978 and "This Flight Tonight" plus "Rock The Nation" in 1991. In one interview Brian Tatler reported that they wrote 100 songs before their first studio release. The truth can be proven in this statement by the fact that only one song (It's Electric) from their 1978 set ended up being recorded on their debut.
Current Members: Nick Tart - vocals (formerly of The Outcasts, Alabama Bombshell, Notorious, Life) Brian Tatler - lead guitar (Radio Moscow, Quill) (1977-Present) Andy "Abbz" Abberley - rhythm guitar Eddie Moohan - bass guitar Karl Wilcox - drums
Past members: Sean Harris (1977-2005) Colin Kimberley(1978-1983) Duncan Scott (1977-1983) Floyd Brennan Mervyn Goldsworthy Robbie France Adrian Mills Josh Phillips-Gorse Dave Williamson Pete Vuckovic

Death Angel

Death Angel, formed in 1982, is a Filipino-American thrash metal band from Concord, California. Death Angel broke up in 1991, but reformed at the Thrash of the Titans benefit concert for Chuck Billy in 2001.
Death Angel was formed in San Francisco, California, in 1982 by Rob Cavestany (lead guitar), Dennis Pepa (Bass guitar, vocals), Gus Pepa (rhythm guitar), and Andy Galeon (drums), who are all cousins. After considering a number of different names for the band, including "Dark Fury," Cavestany and D. Pepa settled on the name "Death Angel" after coming across a book by that title in a book store. In 1983, the band released its first demo, Heavy Metal Insanity, with Matt Wallace serving as producer. According to Mark Osegueda, the group was then "more like a metal band, more like Iron Maiden, Tygers Of Pan Tang and stuff like that," as the so-called Bay Area thrash movement was only just beginning to rise to prominence at the time, and make its influence felt. Osegueda, a second cousin of the other four members who had been working as their roadie, became the group's vocalist in 1984 and performed his first show with the band on a bill with Megadeth in April of that year (at one of the four Megadeth gigs to feature Kerry King on guitar).
Death Angel continued to play club gigs in and around the San Francisco Bay area for nearly 2 years, writing songs and refining their stage show. In 1986, the band recorded the Kill As One demo with Metallica's Kirk Hammett (whom they had met at a record store signing in 1983) as producer. Due to the underground tape trading wave of the early 1980s, the demo was distributed extensively and brought the band to the attention of a still-wider audience; Osegueda later recalled that prior to the release of the band's first album, "we were playing in L.A. and New York, and the crowd was singing our songs, because there was this underground tape trading....That's what keeps it alive, and I think that's absolutely wonderful."
Current members: Mark Osegueda - vocals Rob Cavestany - guitars, backing vocals Ted Aguilar - guitars Andy Galeon - drums Dennis Pepa - bass guitar, backing vocals
Former members: Gus Pepa - guitar (1982–1991)

After forming in 1991, Dreams of Sanity released two demos in 1994 and 1996. They toured Europe late in 1996 before releasing their proper debut in 1997, which was inspired by The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri. Two further full-lengths were issued by the band, the first based upon Phantom of the Opera and the second exploring the concept of life as a game. Dream Theater

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty" by John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess.
Dream Theater has become a successful progressive rock band, despite the drop in popularity of the genre since the mid-1970s. Although the band has had a few successful hits (notably "Pull Me Under" in the early 1990s, which received extensive MTV rotation), they have mostly stayed underground for their career, feeding off support from their fans.
The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians. Guitarist John Petrucci has been named as the third player on the G3 tour six times, more than any other invited guitarist, following in the footsteps of Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
The band's two highest selling albums are the gold selling Images and Words (1992), although it reached only #61 on the Billboard 200 charts, and Awake (1994) which reached #32 on the Billboard 200. Recently Systematic Chaos entered US Billboard 200 at #19. Dream Theater has sold over two million albums in the U.S., and over 8 million albums and DVDs worldwide.
Current members: James LaBrie - lead vocals, percussion, keyboards (1991-present) John Myung - bass, chapman stick (1985-present) John Petrucci - guitar, backing vocals (1985-present) Mike Portnoy - drums, percussion, vocals (1985-present) Jordan Rudess - keyboards, continuum, lap steel guitar (1999-present)
Former members: Chris Collins - vocals (1985-1986) Charlie Dominici - vocals (1986-1989) Kevin Moore - keyboards (1985-1994) Derek Sherinian - keyboards, backing vocals (1994-1999)

Dire Straits

Dire Straits were an English rock band, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), his brother David Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums), and subsequently managed by Ed Bicknell. Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock reigned, Dire Straits worked within the conventions of classic rock, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s. In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down the amps so that patrons could converse while the band played — indicative of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful, with their first album going multi-platinum globally.
The band's best-known songs include "Sultans of Swing", "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Private Investigations", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "So Far Away", "Brothers in Arms" and "Calling Elvis". Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have sold in excess of 118 million albums to date.
In 1978, Dire Straits recorded their first album, Dire Straits (so called due to the financial condition the members were living in at the time), at Basing Street studios (now known as 'Sarm West') near Portobello Road in West London for £12,500. During the initial U.K. release on Vertigo Records, a division of Phonogram, the album had little promotion and was not well received. However, the U.K. album came to the attention of Karin Berg, an assistant in the artists and repertoire (A&R) department of Warner Bros. Records in New York City. She felt it was the kind of music that audiences were hungry for, but only one person in her department agreed at first. "Other people didn't hear it. The act was doing poorly in the U.K., and the record wasn't getting air play." After the album was released in the United States by Warner Brothers, it caught on quickly and sold over 1 million copies.
Former members: Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, Alan Clark, Guy Fletcher, David Knopfler, Pick Withers, Hal Lindes, Terry Williams, Jack Sonni

Dragonforce

DragonForce are an English power metal band formed in London in 1999. The group is known for its fast paced songs, twin guitar solos, and incorporation of electronic sound effects into their music.
DragonForce was formed in 1999 from the remnants of the band Demoniac under the name of DragonHeart, but they changed their name to DragonForce before releasing any commercial albums due to possible issues with Brazilian band Dragonheart. Their career began with the publishing of their early songs on the first incarnation of MP3.com, claiming the top of the site's heavy metal charts. The hit song "Valley of the Damned" reached over 500,000 downloads in the first few months. Two of the original members, Steve Williams and Steve Scott, left the band to form the power metal outfit Power Quest. Sam Totman also started a side project called Shadow Warriors featuring himself and ZP Theart. Sam has confirmed many times that Herman Li was not involved with Shadow Warriors.

Def Leppard

Def Leppard are an English hard rock/heavy metal band from Sheffield, who formed in 1977 as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Largely on the strength of their albums Pyromania and Hysteria, Def Leppard became one of the top-selling rock bands throughout the 1980s, selling over 65 million albums worldwide, including over 35 million in the United States alone. Def Leppard are ranked #31 on VH1's "Greatest Artists of Hard Rock".
Def Leppard's music is a mixture of hard rock, album-oriented rock (AOR), and heavy metal elements, with its multi-layered, harmonic vocals and its melodic guitar riffs. However, even though they were often considered the leaders of the NWOBHM movement of the late '70s, in the mid-1980's they had associated more with the pop metal movement, in large part due to their mainstream success and production. Despite all of this, Def Leppard have expressed dislike of the "pop metal" label.
By the release of the Hysteria album, the band had developed a distinctive sound featuring heavy drums and effects-laden guitar sounds overlaid with a multi-layered wall of husky, harmonised vocals. Def Leppard is one of only five rock bands with two original albums selling over 10 million copies each in the US. The others are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Van Halen.
Current members: Joe Elliott – lead vocals, additional guitars, keyboards (1977–present) Phil Collen – guitars, backing vocals (1982–present) Vivian Campbell – guitars, backing vocals (1992–present) Rick Savage – bass, keyboards, additional guitars, backing vocals (1977–present) Rick Allen – drums, percussion, backing vocals (1978–present)

Disturbed

Monday, August 4, 2008

Disturbed is a rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The group was formed in 1996 when musicians Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, and Mike Wengren hired singer David Draiman. They have sold over 10 million albums worldwide, and released three consecutive #1 albums. More notably, only six other rock bands have released three #1 albums in a row. These bands include Van Halen, Pearl Jam, U2, Dave Matthews Band, Staind, and Metallica. Originally classified as a nu metal band, they are now regarded as alternative metal. However, the band's genre is still being debated. When asked about die-hard metal fans not finding Disturbed heavy enough, frontman David Draiman stated: We probably have too much melody going on or we're not quite as turbulent or caustic. While I really love that type of music, it's not what we try to do. If we have to place things in context, we're more hard rock than heavy metal these days. In its early days, Disturbed was known as Brawl, a band whose lineup included guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, bassist Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, and vocalist Eric Awalt. Eric Awalt left the band shortly after the recording of a demo tape and the other three members went on advertising for a singer. David Draiman joined as the band's vocalist in 1996. The band was then re-named Disturbed

Current Members: David Draiman - vocals (1996-present) Dan Donegan - lead guitar, (1996-present) John Moyer - bass, backing vocals (2004-present) Mike Wengren - drums (1996-present)
Former Members: Steve "Fuzz" Kmak - bass (1996-2003) Matt Konopinski[citation needed] - bass (2004, no recordings with the band)

Dimmu Borgir

Dimmu Borgir is a symphonic black metal band from Norway. "Dimmu Borgir" means "Dark Cities" or "Dark Fortresses" in Icelandic and Old Norse. The name is derived from a volcanic formation in Iceland, Dimmuborgir. Dimmu Borgir started as a melodic black metal band in 1993. Formed by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv, the band released an EP in 1994 entitled Inn i evighetens mørke ("Into the Darkness of Eternity" in English). This short EP sold out within weeks, and the band followed up with the 1994 full length album For all tid. This album featured musical contributions by members of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende. The initial lineup consisted of Shagrath playing guitar with Tjodalv on drums and Silenoz covering vocals, however this changed before the release of Stormblåst (translates to "Storm Blown") on Cacophonous Records in 1996. Stormblåst received high praise from many melodic black metal fans, and is often regarded as a highlight of the band's career. It is also the last album which features all lyrics written and sung in Norwegian.
